Reading the Warranty Before You Compare Solar Panel Quotes

Two solar panel quotes can look almost identical: same wattage, similar price, and a long warranty printed near the top. The difference usually appears later, in the documents attached to the offer. One warranty may cover a manufacturing defect; another may describe the power a module is expected to retain. Neither line, by itself, tells you how easy it will be to make a claim.

Start by separating the two promises

A product warranty deals with the module as a product: materials or workmanship, within the limits written by the manufacturer. A performance warranty deals with output under defined conditions over time. It is not a guarantee of the electricity a whole project will generate. Inverter choice, shading, orientation, soiling and maintenance all affect that result.

This distinction matters when reviewing a bid sheet. If it lists one large warranty duration without naming which coverage it refers to, ask the supplier to identify the product warranty and the performance schedule separately. Then make sure both documents apply to the exact model and power class in the quotation.

Compare the process, not just the number of years

Imagine two offers for the same project. Supplier A lists a longer term, but the quotation does not say who receives a claim or whether the buyer pays for inspection and transport. Supplier B lists a shorter term and includes a warranty certificate with a named responsible entity, a clear start date and a defined claim procedure. The second offer is easier to evaluate because the buyer can see what would happen if something goes wrong. This is a comparison method, not a claim about any specific supplier.

When reading the actual documents, look for the warranty start date, the party responsible, required evidence, available remedies, exclusions and any transfer conditions if the project is sold. Check how the terms treat installation, handling, storage and operation. Those details differ across manufacturers and markets; a sales summary cannot replace the certificate.

The performance curve needs context

For performance coverage, read the full degradation schedule rather than relying on a single end-point percentage. Note any initial tolerance, the stated measurement conditions and how a tested module's output is compared with the warranted level. Ask who arranges testing and which costs are covered. The answer may affect how useful the promise is in a cross-border project.

Keep the comparison fair: use the same model, rated power and datasheet revision for every offer. A warranty attached to a similar-looking panel may not apply to the module being quoted.

What to settle before the purchase order

Ask the supplier to attach the current warranty documents to the quotation and identify the entity responsible for each one. Confirm when coverage begins, how claims are filed from the destination country, what records you must retain, and whether inspection, labor, removal or transport costs are included in a remedy.

For an EPC or distributor, keep the invoice, model and serial-number list, delivery inspection notes, installation records and commissioning documents together. If a claim is raised later, these records help establish which modules were supplied and how they were handled and installed.

A warranty is one part of choosing a module supplier. It should be read alongside certification for the destination market, product traceability, technical support and the commercial contract. The useful question is not simply "How many years?" but "Who is responsible, what evidence is required, and what happens next?"

For a live project, review the signed warranty documents and contract that apply to the selected module and destination market.
